Huaraches and Sope – A+ Comparison Guide

They’re a type of running shoe that I’ve only heard about thanks to their popularity in the running community. So, I decided to give them a try. Here’s what I discovered: they’re pretty good shoes, but they’re not for everyone.

What makes a huarache different from a sope?

Huaraches and sopes are both crispy cornmeal appetizers, but huaraches are larger, sandal-shaped meals that may be served as a full course. Sopes are circular and considerably smaller, making them ideal for a snack in between meals. They’re also thicker, so they’ll stay together better when wet things like salsa are added.

The dough for the base

Both of the dough bases are much thicker than a standard tortilla.

When it comes to choosing the right topping components for each meal, there are a few hard and fast guidelines. They often utilize the same components that are commonly seen in other types of street cuisine, such as burritos and tacos.

Cactus paddles, unlike sopes, are more often seen in huaraches, along with cilantro and other salad components. Sopes are often served with chicken (Sopes de Pollo) or ground beef, chorizo, or carnitas, among other meats.

Cooking technique

Water, Masa Harina, and salt are kneaded together until a dough formed for both meals. After flattening, it is cooked for a few minutes on each side on the comal (griddle) – just long enough to dry the exterior.

If you’re preparing them at home, the dough may be prepared ahead of time and frozen for up to one month or refrigerated for up to three days. The fillings should be kept separate and combined only before serving.

Size of the serving

A huarache is about two to three times the size of a sope. It’s a filling breakfast, lunch, or supper option, and it’s often served with sides like guacamole and refried beans.

Sopes are a more common snack to eat in between meals. They’re a great late-night energy boost for anybody enjoying a night on the town. Of course, it may be made into a full dinner with the addition of rice and salad.
